In all of Apple’s iPhone/ringtone data, including garagebands’ ringtone generator, the total duration for a ringtone is 40 seconds. You can create a ringtone in Garageband/iTunes and send it to your mobile, and it will work flawlessly. When you choose it in your phone’s settings, it’ll even play the entire ringtone. When you receive a call, it would only play for 20 seconds before slashing off and going to voicemail!

Upon calling Apple technical support, who directed me to AT&T, I received the following response.

All iPhones have an automatic default ring length of 20 seconds, monitored by AT&T! It can only be enlarged to 30 seconds if you call AT&T’s tech support and request it!

All iPhones have an automatic default ring length of 20 seconds, monitored by AT&T! It can only be enlarged to 30 seconds if you call AT&T’s tech support and request it!

So, until AT&T allows you the full 40 seconds, ignore what Apple is telling us and only allow your custom ringtones to have a maximum of 30 seconds (Oh, and don’t forget to call AT&T to get the precious 10-second extension before voicemail picks up)!

For many, this shorter ringtone playback length is not a big deal, but I often need the extra time to get my phone out of my backpack or get it before it stops ringing. I am averaging a 50% successful pick-up rate to beat the voicemail.

Is there a limit to how long an iPhone ringtone can be?

Four minutes and forty seconds

In all of Apple’s iPhone/ringtone info, including Garageband’s ringtone generator, the total duration for a ringtone is 40 seconds. Garageband/iTunes can be used to create a ringtone; and I have sent this to your phone and it works great.

Which ringtone seems to be the longest you’ve ever heard?

No such way as a limit exists. If you make a whole song your ringtone, you’ll hear 20-30 seconds of this before the call goes to a phone message or you reply to it.
